Honduran Rompope Recipe for Christmas
Ingredients
1 liter of whole milk
1 cup of sugar
6 egg yolks
1 cinnamon stick
1 cup of Honduran rum (optional)
1 teaspoon of vanilla essence
½ teaspoon of grated nutmeg
Preparation
Step 1 : First, pour the milk into a large saucepan and add the cinnamon stick, heating the milk over medium heat until warm, but not boiling.
Step 2 : Then, remove the cinnamon and set the milk aside.
Step 3 : In a bowl, beat the egg yolks with the sugar until you get a smooth, creamy mixture, ensuring the sugar dissolves completely into the mixture.
Step 4 : Next, slowly pour the yolk mixture into the warm milk, stirring constantly to prevent lumps and to cook the yolks.
Step 5 : Continue cooking the mixture over medium-low heat until it thickens slightly.
Step 6 : If desired, add the rum to the mixture and stir well; otherwise, this step can be skipped.
Step 7 : Also, add the vanilla essence and grated nutmeg, mixing carefully to evenly distribute the flavors.
Step 8 : Once removed from the heat, let the mixture cool to room temperature.
Step 9 : When cooled, transfer the rompope to a bottle or airtight container and refrigerate for at least 4 hours or overnight to allow the flavors to blend and the rompope to develop its characteristic texture.
Step 10 : To serve, it is recommended to serve the Honduran rompope very cold in small glasses, possibly garnished with a little additional grated nutmeg on top as decoration.
