Flautas

A typical Honduran recipe that is frequently prepared in homes, taverns, and restaurants across the country.

Originally, they were made with rolled corn tortillas filled with various ingredients. This dish holds a special significance in Honduran culture, being a delicious representation of the local culinary tradition.

Ingredients

1 kilogram of Boneless chicken breast

12 Corn tortillas

12 Wooden toothpicks

2 Chicken bouillon cubes

½ tablespoon of Ground oregano

½ tablespoon of Ground cumin

½ Onion

2 Unpeeled garlic cloves

4 Red tomatoes

1 Red bell pepper

1 tablespoon of Mustard

3 tablespoons of Cornstarch dissolved in water

200 grams of Grated white cheese

2 Julienned red tomatoes

5 Washed and chopped lettuce leaves

1 Cut-up avocado

1 pinch of Salt

Oil for frying

1 pinch of Black pepper

Preparation

Step 1 : Place the chicken breasts in a pot with water along with the bouillon, salt, black pepper, oregano, and cumin, cooking for approximately 30 minutes.

Step 2 : Once done, remove the chicken and let it rest in a colander.

Step 3 : Shred the chicken by hand and reserve 2 cups of broth.

Step 4 : Chop the tomatoes, garlic, onions, and peppers, then blend them until smooth.

Step 5 : Add this mixture to a skillet along with the reserved chicken broth, cornstarch, mustard, salt, and pepper, cooking over medium heat and stirring constantly.

Step 6 : When the sauce reaches the desired consistency, remove from heat.

Step 7 : Fill the tortillas with shredded chicken, roll them up, and secure with a toothpick in the middle to prevent them from falling apart.

Step 8 : In a skillet with hot oil, carefully cook the flautas, browning them on both sides.

Step 9 : Remove from the oil and place on absorbent paper.

Step 10 : For the salad, mix all ingredients with a little olive oil, salt, and pepper to taste.

Step 11 : Serve the flautas on a plate, cover with sauce, and add cheese to taste.
