Siguatepeque, the city of pines and flowers, as it is well known, is also given another unique name that describes it, the city of delicious lemons, since it is in this city where these wonderful sweets have been prepared and sold for over half a century.
The delicious chilacayote
The main ingredient of this sweet is the chilacayote, a pumpkin very popular in Honduras, also called chiberro.
Its preparation is very traditional, which involves many hours of cooking and making. Many confectionery masters from rural areas specialize in this recipe, which is an inheritance they pass on to their children.
Stories from producers of this highly desired sweet mention that at least 200 chiberros are processed daily, and the final product lasts for days during its preparation.
As you will notice, the process takes several days to reach its optimal state.
The process begins by peeling the pumpkins, cutting them into cubes, then soaking them in lime for about 7 hours; after that, they are rinsed in water and dried before cooking them for another 7 hours, along with other ingredients such as water and sugar.
How to prepare
The preparation is very complex and requires significant physical effort to ensure everything turns out well, resulting in that incomparable sweet that is a delicacy for Hondurans.
Local artisans know how to make this delicious sweet, which has not been surpassed by processed machines in globalization.
