A dish recognized by locals and foreigners for its exquisite flavor. It has become a culinary staple in Honduras thanks to its easy preparation with affordable ingredients.
The dish is so traditional in Honduran cuisine that there is a day dedicated to celebrating it. On June 16, 2018, the national day of enchiladas or Baleadas was celebrated for the first time.
The culture of Baleadas
In popular culture, it is said that baleadas originated in the city of San Pedro Sula, where a woman who sold them survived a gunshot wound during a shootout.
And, people began to refer to her food stand as the "baleada". However, there is no historical source to support this story.
This dish is so popular that songs have been written about it. An example is Colombian accordionist and singer-songwriter Aniceto Molina, who composed a song called "The Baleada" after visiting Honduras.
